Things worth knowing

Fitting a radiator sounds simple, but there are a few things that come up on most jobs. None of them are problems — they're just part of doing the work properly.

Imperial to metric sizing

Many older homes still have imperial-sized radiators. Modern replacements are metric and often don't match the existing pipework positions. We handle this with pipe extenders or pipework alterations — sometimes above the floor, sometimes below, depending on the floor type.

Fitting around decorating

If you're planning to decorate, we can do a two-stage job: remove the old radiators first so you've got clear walls, then come back to fit the new ones afterwards. Worth mentioning early so we can plan it in.

Designer radiators and pipework

Vertical and horizontal designer radiators are popular but often come in sizes that don't match existing pipework positions. Same as any replacement — we'll sort the pipework to suit the radiator you've chosen.

Towel rail quality

Heated towel rails come in a huge range. We avoid the cheapest ones on the market — the finish tends to be poor and they don't last. Better to spend a little more on something that looks right and holds up.

Adding radiators — pipe sizing matters

When adding radiators in a new location, pipe sizing needs careful thought — especially on systems with smaller bore pipework (8mm or 10mm). Undersized pipes can't deliver enough hot water to the new radiators, meaning they won't heat up properly. We check the system capacity before committing to additional radiators.

Inhibitor is always included

When radiators are installed or replaced, corrosion inhibitor must be added to the system. Without it, the new radiators will corrode internally and the debris will circulate through the system and can damage the boiler. We always add inhibitor as part of the job — it's non-negotiable, not an optional extra.

“My room isn't heating up — do I need a bigger radiator?”

The assumption

Most customers assume that if a room isn't warm enough, the answer is a bigger radiator. It's a reasonable thought, and most fitters will happily sell you one.

What we do instead

If the existing radiator isn't heating up fully — cold spots, cold at the bottom — the fix is usually to get it working properly first. That could be a balancing issue, a circulation problem, or sludge. Installing a bigger radiator on a system that isn't flowing properly just gives you a bigger radiator that doesn't work. We diagnose before we recommend a replacement.

Every radiator job is different — it depends on the radiator choice, the pipework situation, and the number of radiators. Call or WhatsApp and we'll talk it through. If you're looking at designer radiators, Jade can point you to catalogues to help you choose.
